I. Description of ProofProof of any ODST find is:
1. Necessary
2. Expected
3. Your responsibility if the find is yours!
The proof must:
1. Demonstrate the claims of your find
2. Be a Valid Form of Proof.
3. Be available to the internet community for viewing and linking.
II. FAQWhy is proof necessary?A: Proof of ODST findings is necessary for the findings to be accepted by the community. It is simply not good enough to encourage people to "try it yourself". People want to see ahead of time what you have done before they try to attempt it themselves; otherwise, they will feel like they are wasting their time. After all- if you didn't care enough to provide proof, why should they care enough to try it?
What happens if I don't provide proof of my find?A: If you fail to provide proof of your find, you should expect that no one will believe you or even care. If you report a find to the SGP without any proof, your report may even be deleted by a moderator or admin. The need for proof is directly proportional to the significance of your find. Therefore, if you make an outrageous claim like "A ghost leaped up from Squidhenge!" then lack of proof will be met with consternation and due ridicule.
III. Valid Forms of Proof- 1. Theater Mode Image
- 2. Theater Mode Video
- 3. External Video (only valid when it isn't possible to demonstrate the find using Theater Mode!)
In most cases, proof of an ODST find can be provided using Halo 3: ODST's ability to create image snapshots and video clips in-game using Theater Mode (Numbers 1 and 2 in the above list). These can then be shared via the player's free Bungie.net Fire Share. This should be done whenever your are reporting a new find, if possible.
In rare cases (e.g. the need to show the ODST main menus, the need to show the VISR menus) Theater Mode is not enough to provide proof of a find. ONLY in these cases should an external video be used as a valid form of proof. External image snapshots are not valid proof, since they are easily manipulated by the most inexperienced of internet users.
IV. How to Post Theater Mode Images1. Ensure that your XBL Gamertag is linked to your Bungie.net (B.net) account.
2. Enter theater mode while connected to XBL and take a snapshot. It will be uploaded to Bungie.net and will appear on your B.net profile page under "recent screenshots".
3. Put the image in your file share. You should keep it there for at least 24 hours after you have made your SGP report.
4. Go to the image in B.Net and click on the "View High Res" link under "File Actions" below the image. This will prompt you to save the image to your computer. Do so, and preserve the filename that B.net sets (it is a unique ID!). Remember where you saved the image! You may wish to put the image in its own folder that you can name more descriptively (e.g. "2009.12.31-New Years Eve Photos")
5. In your SGP post, provide a link to the image in your file share.
6. Attach the high-res image you downloaded to your PC to your new post.
7. You should now have a link to the image in your file share (proving that the image was taken in-game) as well as a high-res copy of the image attached to your post (making it viewable to readers without going to B.net and ensuring that the image sticks around after you remove it from your file share.) Click "Preview Post" to make sure both of these work!
V. How to Post Theater Mode Videos1. Ensure that your XBL Gamertag is linked to your Bungie.net (B.net) account.
2. Recreate the thing you are reporting about in-game. Attempt to do this in the shortest time possible. It is very helpful to first get to a checkpoint just before you are ready to make your magic happen. Then, exit your game and resume it again. This will cause a new game video to be created for later viewing in Theater Mode that begins at your checkpoint rather than at the very beginning of the mission. Once you have recreated the occurrence you are reporting about in-game, wait about a minute and then end the game. This will prevent your video clip from becoming too long and also allow some extra time at the end for viewers to pause and use the floating camera to explore the area.
3. Enter Theater Mode, click "Recent Games", highlight the game which contains your short demonstration and hit the X button to save it.
4. Upload the video to your B.Net file share. Keep it in your file share for at least 24 hours so that people have some time to see it!
5. Provide a link to the video in your SGP post.
6. Preview your message and test that the link works.
VI. How to Post External Videos1. Capture a video which demonstrates your find. Make it as short as possible.
2. Post the video to a location on the internet where it can be accessed by anyone. YouTube is the de facto standard. The video should be accessible to the public for as long as there is public interest in your find.
3. Provide a link to the video in your SGP post.
4. Preview your message and test that the link works.
VI. Guide Update ProcedureGuides are initially submitted to the SGP Forum's "Work-In-Progress" board in a post by the author. They are then discussed, edited, and approved by SGP members. When the first edition is ready, it is copied here in the "SGP Guides" board. Although this Guide post is read-only, the author's original submission post is left open in Inquires so that future emendations can be made.
If you would like to propose an emendation to this Guide, please post a reply to
this topic.
